Head Straight for the Theater for the Story of NWA

From Universal Pictures Youtube

Straight Outta Compton is the story of the rap group N.W.A., highlighting the early careers of Ice Cube (O'Shea Jackson Jr.), Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins), and Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell). Currently Straight Outta Compton has an 8.3 out of 10 on IMDB and a 90% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The story of N.W.A. is presented in a wonderful experience that connects the audience with artists that they have known of but never understood.

This film was really well made to follow these downtrodden young men through their early careers with an emotional through line that follows the Rodney King verdict which can be seen as a modern commentary on our society today. What this film does well is depicting these characters who were seen has hardened individuals as vulnerable both emotionally and even physically in certain situations in the film. Director F. Gary Gray has worked with Ice Cube before when he directed Friday whose screenplay was written by Ice Cube who was also a lead in the film. Director Gray definitely understood that Straight Outta Compton wasn't just a story about a rap group but a look into the individuals progression as people through their successes and failures.

The only reason this film is not perfect is because some of the scenes and characters utilized seem out of place they do not fit in a scene or the scene itself is not needed for the overall storyline. The over 2 hour run time was daunting for a story about a rap group this produced lulls in the film that noticeably slowed down the storyline. These scenes could be explained by scenes cut from the film which could have provided more context for the extraneous scenes.

I highly recommend seeing this film and caution that there is an abundance of adult language and nudity so if you are offended by those aspects do not see this film. Straight Outta Compton is possibly the must see movie from the summer of 2015.
