Casting for Justice League Dark just Broke

Justice League Dark is one of the most interesting series of comic books I have read because of the series of characters on the team. Justice League Dark chronicles the adventures of some occult members of the DC universe that battle more magical forces than the Justice League. The members consists of Swamp Thing, Constantine, Deadman, The Shadow, and Zatanna are just some of the heroes involved in the League. With this interesting host of characters and DC having an entire line-up of films coming down the pipeline there are rumors that there will be a Justice League Dark film.

In 2013 at Wondercon Guillermo Del Toro stated that there was a screenplay he had written for this host of characters and was trying to get the film made. With DC's success with Man of Steel, a darker version of the Superman has been born along with the DC cinematic universe and Suicide Squad already on production a Justice League Dark film has been the closest than ever to being made. News on the film's director occurred around 4 months ago when Guillermo Del Toro said he would not be able to direct the film because he wanted to focus on Pacific Rim 2 but would still be a producer on the film.

The most recent news are a few casting choices for the lead roles of Constantine, Madame Xanadu, and Swamp Thing. There are rumors for Colin Ferrell to play Constantine, who is seen as the leader at times of the League. There have been talks of Ewan McGregor being considered for the role. For Madame Xanadu the studio's choice is Monica Bellucci (Matrix, Spectre) and a Hispanic actress is being considered for Zatanna. Of course a Guillermo picture would not be amazing without Ron Perlman, who is being considered for Swamp Thing.

I have no issues with the casting except for maybe Constantine because of the ability to use the television actor Matt Ryan, who played him on the cancelled television show. DC is making a mistake because they have a large cast of television stars who play the heroes yet do not or seem to not be considering using them in the films. Marvel has done well with integrating the films with the television show in order to create a broader universe even before a film is released. Hopefully Matt Ryan gets his shot at the role because he was really good on the television show. I really like these series of comic because the magic and occult characters in the series stray away from raw power when thinking of the Justice League and Suicide Squad when is comes to villains. These more obscure characters in movies is what this news really gets me excited about because that means the possibilities for comic book films are not limited to the more widely known characters.
